The School of Communication and Journalism, otherwise known as COJO, provides students with opportunity, experience and high-quality education. We offer a variety of unique courses between our undergraduate programs and our graduate programs. Our COJO faculty and staff are here to help you succeed in whatever area of communication you feel passionate about.

Hendricks honored as David Adams Scholastic Journalism Division Educator of the Year

Marina Hendricks, assistant professor and graduate program coordinator for the online Master of Mass Communication in South Dakota State University’s School of Communication and Journalism, has been recognized as the David Adams Scholastic Journalism Division Educator of the Year.
Andrea Carlile, director of forensics and assistant professor of communication studies, shown at Jackrabbits Forensics' Night Before Nationals event in April, will speak on reinvigorating speech and debate team culture at the Speech Communication Association of South Dakota annual conference on South Dakota State University’s campus July 24-25.

Changing the journalism narrative

The field of journalism has had hard criticisms in recent years. One individual is looking to change that through the power of books … and her cat. Miranda O’Bryan is a Martin native and a 2020 graduate from the South Dakota State University School of Communication and Journalism and School of American and Global Studies. She also held the title of Miss South Dakota 2023, where she used her platform for awareness of literacy rates and addressing the misconceptions of the journalism field.
