About Work-Study
- Work-Study funds are earned through work and paid to students as a paycheck.
- Work-Study funds are not posted to a student’s ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ bill.
- Most campus positions and off-campus non-profit or governmental positions can be paid through the Work-Study Program.
- ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ receives a limited amount of Work-Study funds from the federal government each year.
- ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ does not assign Work-Study positions – students need to secure their own Work-Study jobs.
- Work-Study students cannot work during a scheduled class time.
- A student's total earnings from Work-Study cannot exceed the amount awarded.
- Federal Work-Study employees will earn at least minimum wage however, wages will vary by the employer.
Students are encouraged to inquire directly with any departments or facilities which they are interested in working at. If students should need assistance obtaining a Work-Study position, they can contact the ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ Department of Labor Office at 605-688-6668.
Eligibility Requirements
³ÉÈËÊÓƵ receives a limited amount of Federal Work-Study Funds each year.
In order to qualify, students must have unmet financial need. For the 2024-2025 school year a student must meet the following criteria to receive a Federal Work-Study Award:
- Submit a completed FAFSA on or before the March 15 FAFSA priority date.
- Have a Student Aid Index from the FAFSA between 6101 and 9000.
- Request to receive Work-Study on the FAFSA.
- Be attending at ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ’s Main Campus in Brookings.
- Continuing students must have received Work-Study in the prior school year.
Often, additional Work-Study funds become available during the school year, these may be awarded to students who have at least $4,000 in unmet financial need and who request Work-Study by contacting the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships maintains a Work-Study waiting list to track students who would like to receive Work-Study. To be placed on the waiting list, students should call the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at 605-688-4695 to check eligibility. In awarding additional Work-Study funds, priority is given to students who have higher financial need and who have been offered a Work-Study eligible position.
Community Service Jobs
Students are able to work Community Service jobs within Brookings. If you are eligible for work-study and already working for a non-profit or looking at working with a non-profit, let our office know and we can get the paperwork started with the non-profit so that you can utilize your work-study funding there.
