Art Education Specialization in Studio Art (B.F.A.)
The School of Design offers a professional B.F.A. (Bachelors of Fine Art) in Studio Art with a specialization in art education. This degree is comprised of art and design studio experiences, art history lecture courses and the teacher education sequence of courses. Students study a variety of art-making methods and techniques, as well as meeting the requirements for South Dakota teacher certification.

- Foundational design concepts.
- Drawing skills, basic to advanced.
- Computer graphics and photography.
- Creative thinking.
- Painting with several different media.
- Printmaking and letterpress, contemporary and traditional.
- 3D design.
- Ceramics, hand-built and wheel-thrown.
- Sculptural process.
- Sculptural welding and metalwork.
- Professional practice.
- Art history.
- Internships and travel study.
- Education courses.
Students complete 65 credits in studio art and design-related studies, 30 credits in teacher education, along with 35 credits of institutional requirements and additional electives to reach 128 credits needed for graduation.
This degree prepares students to teach art in secondary education and meeting the requirements for South Dakota teacher certification.
