Morrill Hall 2018

Morrill Hall鈥攏amed in honor of Justin Smith Morrill, who is widely remembered today for the Morrill Land-Grant College Act鈥攈ouses several offices on campus. This includes the Office of the President, Office of Academic Affairs, Graduate School, Budget and Finance, University Counsel, Technology and Security, Human Resources and Accounting.

Building Description

While several staff and university administrators work there, students can come to Morrill Hall to use or learn about Title IX resources. They can also get help connecting electronic devices to the internet, pay tuition and more.

In 1911, the South Dakota Legislature appropriated $100,000 for the Agricultural and Administration Building. At the time, it was the largest amount ever allocated by the South Dakota Legislature. It funded construction of the middle and south wings. At the time of its construction, the building contained seven classrooms, 42 offices, 24 laboratories, an auditorium, home economics kitchen, parlor, laundry, bulletin room, model drug store, music rooms and a greenhouse. An additional $100,000 appropriation was needed in 1917 to complete and equip the building. The extension to the north was added in 1918. After the agricultural department gained additional facilities in 1925, the administration building served as home to the economics, art and pharmacy programs as well as rooms for classes and a greenhouse. The architectural highlight of the building is the classically inspired front entrance with iconic order columns and a central decorative motif. It was renamed Morrill Hall in 2016.
