Built in 1909, Wecota Hall was the first women's dormitory on campus. Designed by Sioux Falls architect John J. Schwartz, construction on Wenona Hall begun in 1908 and was completed in 1909 at a cost of $50,000. Art instructor Ada Caldwell secured the name鈥攚hich represents the name given to the first maiden daughter in an Indian family鈥攆rom state historian Doane Robinson.
Building Description
Wenona and Wecota halls were added to the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior May 7, 1980.
Both Wenona Hall and Wecota Hall are fine examples of the neoclassical style and significant for their representation of early 20th century academic architecture in a campus setting.
