Theatre and Dance Workshop Invitation Letter

Collision with the Classics

The School of Performing Arts is excited to invite you and your student/s to our high school workshop on November 16, 2024, at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on the South Dakota State University campus. We invite all high school students no matter their expertise to Collision with the Classics. Any student/teacher/director interested in theatre and/or dance performance should plan to attend this exciting performing arts workshop.

Participants will have an opportunity to tour our state-of-the-art facility, take class from faculty, interact with current theatre and dance students from ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ, work alongside others from across the region, share work in a culminating final performance. We are also offering two complimentary tickets for workshop attendees to our production of Macbeth which runs November 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. and November 24 at 2 p.m.

The workshop has a three-fold purpose: 1) Building collaborative community, 2) Enhancing knowledge and skill, and 3) Developing skills in creative work. This event will interest theatre students, those interested in acting/performance and those whose interest is more specifically focused on technical theatre (lights, sound, costumes, make-up and properties and scenic design). This year, the High School Workshop will focus on how classic performance techniques can be utilized in modern storytelling. With explorations in Shakespeare style, language and sword play students will learn new techniques to add to their creative toolbox and discover the universality of classic work in the contemporary context. Participants will explore movement styles that bridge history and contemporary conditions. Additionally, participants will explore technical elements bridging classic technique with modern sensibilities.

Students are encouraged to attend with a director from their school or studio but may also participate individually without a faculty mentor. This event is free to all students and directors, and includes a free lunch, and two complimentary tickets to our production of Macbeth. Registration this year is online. We ask that each student and teacher/director fill out the online registration and required forms individually. Please spread the word to your students and plan to attend this exciting day of learning, growing and sharing.
