“Blow Us All Away” (2/10/21)

Fanning mills replaced winnowing baskets, the flail and the threshing floor. Fanning mills are operated by a small engine that shakes the screens and operates the blower. They remove dust, hulls, straw, pebbles, small immature seeds and weed seeds from the good wheat, barley, oats, rye or other crop being cleaned. Inside the fanning mill are several sized screens to sort the various sizes of seed or contaminants while a fan blew away the chaff and straw. It is important to have clean seed in order to have mold and grit free flour and to have clean, weed free seed for spring planting.

The Clipper 1 B made by A. T. Ferrell & Co, Saginaw, Michigan. Model 1B will clean 10-20 bushels/hour and comes with 12 interchangeable screens, hand crank, and power pulley.  It requires 1/6 H P. can be furnished with electric motor.  Retailers could advertise their business with stenciling their name on the piece. This fanning mill was sold by the House of Gurney, Yankton.
