International feed grinders, ca. 1910-1920 were used on farms with a single-cylinder gasoline engine and a flat belt drive. This mill was used at one of South Dakota State University’s Agricultural Experiment Substations and returned to campus in 1969. It was cleaned and repainted by Agricultural Engineering students before coming to the museum. On the box, it reads “6 Inches”, which refers to the size of the grinding plate. This type of grinder was used to grind shelled corn and small grains like wheat, oats or barley. It runs on 2-8 horsepower at a speed of 125 rpm per horsepower, with the best results obtained at 300 rpm. At this speed, the results were about 10 bushels per hour. Fine and medium plates were furnished with the machine. However, extra-fine or coarse plates could be ordered.
