The Jiffy Way (10/6/21)

Jiffy Can

The Jiffy Way Dependable Egg Candler was manufactured by Jiffy Way Products, Owatonna, Minnesota, ca. 1940s-1950s. It is an aluminum cylinder with a 2 ¼ inch diameter hole in one end and an electrical cord at the other end. Inside the cylinder is a light bulb. On one side of the cylinder are two handles that can be used to attach the candler to a surface such as a tabletop. The label claims that Jiffy Way is “the world’s largest manufacturers of egg scales.”

Candling is done in a dark room. The egg is held in front of the light, making it possible to see the inside of the egg. Candling allows observation of the embryo development and to determine the condition of the air cell, the yolk and the white. Candling detects bloody whites, blood spots or meat spots. Eggs clear of defects are graded and ready for market.
