The Marion Giant FlipFlop Model 66 toaster (12/8/21)

toster

The Marion Giant FlipFlop Model 66 toaster is stainless steel construction and Art Deco design. Patented July 28, 1914, it was manufactured by Rutenber Electric Co., Marion, Ohio. The Rutenber Electric Company produced ranges, irons, grills, toasters, fans and more. The Marion Flip Flop Toaster, patented in 1914, was followed by the Marion Giant Flip Flop Toaster. Two slices of bread could be toasted at the same time with this toaster. The small knobs on the sides pulled the door down and the bread inserted. When one side of the slice was toasted it was removed and flipped over so the other side would toast.

The inventor of this toaster is Edwin Rutenber (1876-1963). Rutenber learned the machinist trade and in 1892 invented a single cylinder engine. He worked for years developing a four-cylinder motor of commercial value. In 1898, he produced his first four-cylinder gasoline motor, the first to be manufactured in the U.S. His four-cylinder engine was used in many early automobiles. In 1912, Rutenber disposed of his interest in the engine manufacturing business and began developing electric appliances. Rutenber continued to be involved in inventing and designing appliances for the rest of his career. By 1958, Rutenber Electric Company was bought by Active Products Corporation.
