Match Case (12/1/21)

work

This small box for storing matches measures 2 3/8 inches X 1 ¾ inches.  It opens when the small spring-loaded button is pushed. The cover design of a pharaoh’s head, complete with asp at the forehead and wide neck plate and surrounded by papyrus blossoms, is typical of Egyptian Revival (1880-1930s) design. The bottom of the box reads “Compliments of Theo. Hamm Brewing, St. Paul, Minn. Call for Hamm’s Beer.” On the back edge of the box, directly under the hinge, is a rough strip for striking a match.  Based on the date when Egyptian Revival design was popular and knowing that Howard Carter set of a new wave of fascination with all things Egyptian with his discovery of King Tut’s tomb, it leads to a guess that this item dates to ca. 1900-1920s. Any Hamm’s memorabilia collectors out there know more about this piece?
