School Lunches for Victory!

A black and white photo of a 1940's woman looking at canned produced in the cellar of the Volga School.

During WWII, the home front mobilized in many ways. More canning and preserving of food was seen as a noble act to ensure the victory of the Allies, as it allowed more processed foods to be sent to the troops. This week’s Throwback Thursday celebrates this movement. From 1943, a lunch lady is seen in the cellar full of canned and root vegetables looking for something for the Volga School’s lunch. From the Leeland Sudlow Collection, the photo is titled “Volga School Lunch Program.â€
