Old quilts tell stories of days gone by. This week’s What’s New Wednesday honors this tradition with a quilt top made by Laura L. Volstorff. She was Vivian “VeeVee” Volstorff’s (Dean of Women at SDSC, later Ƶ) mother. Laura created this quilt in the pattern of Grandmother’s Flower Garden. Many of the patterned fabrics come from flour sacks, decorated for use in the home.
The Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern uses smaller hexagons to create stylized larger hexagon flowers that, put together, look like a flower garden. The Volstorff quilt is 96.5 inches by 77.25 inches with 82 blocks of large hexagons. The backing and batting have been removed. Yarn tied the backing, batting together at one time. However, the hand stitching on the remaining top has stood the test of time.
