Henry and Clement Studebaker opened a blacksmith shop in South Bend, Indiana in 1852. They evolved into the foremost wagon and buggy makers in the U.S. and eventually into manufacturing automobiles. Studebaker Junior “Goat” wagons were originally promotional items manufactured at the Studebaker factory and sold by retail dealerships. The wagons proved to be so popular that the manufacturing was turned over to the South Bend Toy Company, marketing and distribution done through Sears, Roebuck and Company and other retailers. Production of the wagons stopped with the onset of World War II. Unfortunately, we do not know who the children are or where the photograph was taken. The image is from the museum’s postcard collection.
