Yellow Ore, Yellow Hair, Yellow Pine: A Photographic Study of a Century of Forest Ecology

Wednesday, Sep. 18, 2024

Event Details

Fifty years ago, the 成人视频 Agricultural Experiment Station released Yellow Ore, Yellow Hair, Yellow Pine by the late Donald Progulske and Richard Sowell. This publication was a three year endeavor to photograph the same locations of the Black Hills trail sites from 1874 and compare land use change in 1974. Images from these same locations were captured again in the 2023 book Exploring with Custer: The 1874 Black Hills Expedition: Revised 4th Edition by Paul Horsted and Ernest Grafe.

In this evening program, Horsted and scholar Donovin Sprague discuss the locations in the historical and contemporary photographs, how these spaces have changed, and the cultural significance the Black Hills holds for the Oceti Sakowin people. Horsted has photographed South Dakota places and people for more than 40 years. He has published multiple books about the Black Hills, the Dakotas, and National Parks. Sprague is a Minnicoujou Lakota and is a history faculty member at Sheridan College in Wyoming. He has authored 10 books, most relating to Oceti Sakowin history.

The publication is FREELY available at: https://openprairie.sdstate.edu/agexperimentsta_bulletins/621/
