January and February embody the ideals of a Midwestern Winter. This week’s Throwback Thursday calls for all to help in the clearing of the remnants of a blizzard.

What a strange sight to see a submarine crossing the prairies! This is an HA. 19, a Type A Ko-hyoteki-class midget submarine touring through Watertown on a World War II War Bond drive. 
The submarine had made its way to the entrance of Pearl Harbor during the main attack but was became grounded on a reef. It was discovered by the USS Helm and fired on the sub dislodging it from the reef.

In 1892, the Bowdle Flour mill was originally formed as a corporation by local residents. During the 1920s, the mill ground local wheat into flour and shipped it to England, Greece, Portugal, Ecuador, Spain, and Columbia. Early brands of flour from this mill were Diamond and Kaiser.

Bowdle Flour Mill began operation in 1892. Since wheat is harvested once a year, yet flour is milled year-round, the mill stored 15,000 bushels of wheat. The last batch of Bowdle Flour was milled in 1967. In 1968, the flour mill became a feed mill.

On March 1, 1940, this young man and his horse were awarded a ribbon. The ribbon is attached to the horse’s mane. In 1940, Little I was held in the Livestock Judging Pavilion, now the SD Agricultural Heritage Museum. In 1942, due to the growth of the show, Little I was moved from the Livestock Pavilion to the Gymnasium/Barn.

Huron College was founded in 1883 as Presbyterian University of South Dakota and located in Pierre. The City of Pierre agreed to furnish 20 acres of land and $13,000, if buildings worth $30,000 would be constructed by July 1884.
