Phlebotomy Certificate

Students completing the phlebotomy certificate program at ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ are prepared to enter the healthcare setting and collect blood to diagnose illness, evaluate effectiveness of medications and determine whether a patient is receiving proper nutrition.

The phlebotomy certificate prepares students to enter the health care field as phlebotomists. Phlebotomists work in a variety of settings including clinical laboratories, hospitals and community health centers, where they collect blood for donation and analysis. This role is critical in health care as the blood tests are used to diagnose illness, evaluate effectiveness of medications and determine whether a patient is receiving proper nutrition.

The certificate is a mix of online courses, an on-campus lab and clinical experiences in health care settings. The online courses will give you the knowledge needed to be a phlebotomist. A laboratory course on the main ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ campus in Brookings will provide the hands-on experience needed before applying your patient care knowledge and skill in clinical settings such as hospitals and clinics. Following completion of the certificate, the student would be eligible for certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
