Biography

Carey Kilmer serves as director for Continuing and Distance Education at South Dakota State University. Carey has served in various roles supporting Ƶ’s online and distance education programs from technical support to student support. In her previous role as student services facilitator, Carey launched the Bachelor of General Studies, a degree completion program, and a “concierge” support service for returning adult learners at Ƶ. As director, Carey now oversees this work and advocates for the needs of adult learners. As a non-traditional student herself, Carey understands and is able to identify with the students served through Continuing and Distance Education. She collaborates with academic departments to identify potential programs to offer via online learning to reach an audience who may otherwise find higher education out of reach because they are place bound and/or juggling a wide variety of responsibilities. Carey identifies potential barriers at the university and system level, brings awareness to these challenges and attempts to break them down through policy change or support services.
