We are a group of dynamic environmental scientists working on developing remote sensing algorithms and global products for investigating biomass burning emissions, land surface phenology, land cover and land use changes, and climate-terrestrial ecosystem interaction. Our research group is committed to pioneering the exploration of climate-terrestrial ecosystem interaction, leveraging advanced remote sensing technology.
Los Angeles wildfires have been burning in the west and north hills and suburbans since Jan. 7, 2025 due to extremely dry conditions and hurricane-like Santa Ana gusts. Dr. Fangjun Li investigated various satellite data to trace this fire event.
The animation on the right side shows fires observations (orange and red) from GOES-18 on Jan. 7-8.

Landast-9 on Jan. 14 shows the locations and extents of four wildfires: Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Hurst Fire and Kenneth Fire.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated with at least 24 dead and more than 12,000 building structures destroyed as of Jan. 15, 2025.
