Secondary Email Address

What is my secondary email address?

In most cases, your secondary email is the email address you included on your application to South Dakota State University. It could also be the email you received your acceptance letter or any other correspondence from the university.

How can I update my secondary email address?

Faculty and staff need to set their secondary email address via the . Search your name on the directory and once you open your profile you can enter your secondary information. Only you have the permission to edit your secondary information.

Secondary Email Address – Student Employees

The student employee's secondary email address is automatically set as Jack's email address. So, check their student email for the password reset link.


Name Change

Fill out the  on InsideState.

The user needs to submit the form with all of the correct information on it to HR.

Once HR makes the changes in Banner, HR will send a request to the Support Desk.

The Support Desk will then create a ticket and assign it to the Networking Team.

Once networking changes everything, they will assign the ticket back to the Support Desk.

The Support Desk will contact the user and notify them that their Name Change request has been complete.


Account Lockouts

Three incorrect login attempts anywhere the user enters their username and password will lock users out of their ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ Account. This can occur after a user resets their password. It may update on their computer but not their phone. The phone will continually lock it out because the password has not been updated. The lockouts can occur on any device (Phone, tablet, desktop, laptop).

If you are having account lockout issues, you can make sure an old password isn't saved on a device. Make sure that when you are getting locked out that you are not changing your password every time. This can cause even more issues. Here are a few things to check if you are getting locked out of your account frequently.

Check Credential Manager

  • Search Credential Manager on your computer.
  • Remove anything related to your ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ account from the Web and Windows Sections.

Email Profile

  • Close your Outlook program and reopen it; it should prompt you to update your password, especially if you removed the saved password from Credential Manager in step one.

Wireless Profile

  • Click on the wireless icon in the bottom right of your screen.
  • Click on 'Open Network and Internet Settings.'
  • Select WiFi and 'Manage Known Networks.'
  • Go through all the Networks you have connected to and 'Forget' any ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ networks (i.e., ³ÉÈËÊÓƵStudent, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵFacStaff, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵGuest, eduroam, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵIoT).
  • Connect back to your preferred network.
    • ³ÉÈËÊÓƵStudent and ³ÉÈËÊÓƵFacStaff are the two you should be connecting to.
    • ³ÉÈËÊÓƵGuest is for guest only.
    • Eduroam you can connect to, so if you visit any other campus with eduroam, you can connect to their network too.
    • ³ÉÈËÊÓƵIoT if for gaming and streaming devices only.

Check your Keychain

  • Search Keychain.
  • Thoroughly search through all the categories for any ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ related accounts, and delete them.
  • Make sure that none have gone to the Trash Bin; if they have, remove them from there as well.

Email profile

  • Start Outlook.
  • If prompted, enter your new password.
  • Alternatively, click Outlook in the Dock, click Preferences and update your password in Preferences.

Wireless Profile

  • Click on the WiFi icon in the top right and Open Network Preferences.
  • Click on the Advanced button.
  • Go through all the Networks you have connected to and 'Forget' any ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ networks (i.e., ³ÉÈËÊÓƵStudent, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵFacStaff, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵGuest, eduroam, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵIoT).
  • Connect back to your preferred network.
    • ³ÉÈËÊÓƵStudent and ³ÉÈËÊÓƵFacStaff are the two you should be connecting to.
    • ³ÉÈËÊÓƵGuest is for guest only.
    • Eduroam you can connect to, so if you visit any other campus with eduroam, you can connect to their network too.
    • ³ÉÈËÊÓƵIoT if for gaming and streaming devices only.

  • Got into the WiFi settings on your phone.
  • Go through all the Networks you have connected to and 'Forget' any ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ networks (i.e., ³ÉÈËÊÓƵStudent, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵFacStaff, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵGuest, eduroam, ³ÉÈËÊÓƵIoT).
  • Connect back to your preferred network.
    • It would help if you were connecting to either ³ÉÈËÊÓƵStudent or ³ÉÈËÊÓƵFacStaff, depending on your status at ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ
    • ³ÉÈËÊÓƵGuest is for guest only.
    • Eduroam you can connect to, so if you visit any other campus with eduroam, you can connect to their network too.
    • ³ÉÈËÊÓƵIoT if for gaming and streaming devices only.

Outlook Profile

  • Open the Outlook app on your phone.
  • It would help if you were prompted to 'Sign In' at the bottom of the app.
  • If you are not prompted, sign out of the app and back in and you should be prompted for your new password.

Some account lockouts happen because they have a VPN client persistently connected to your home system. Make sure to disconnect your VPN at home.

If you have gone through every device and are still experiencing lockout issues, please contact the Support Desk and they can make a ticket to the networking team from them to dig a little deeper into where the lockouts are happening.


Compromised Accounts

Disabled Accounts

If your SDState account is set to be disabled, but you still need access past the date it is stated to be disabled or already disabled, have your direct supervisor fill out the on InsideState. Once your supervisor has completed the form, the approval process will take place.

Remember, once an employee is no longer receiving a paycheck from the University, they will not have access to the SDState accounts. Keeping their accounts open will incur a cost to the department.

Graduate Disabled Accounts

Most graduate students have an end date of May 21st in HR. Their supervisors either have to fill out the form or submit new paperwork to HR to renew their employment.


Generic Email Accounts

Generic Email Accounts are a great way for multiple users to view and send emails from a single address. It is ideal for ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ organizations, clubs and departmental offices with multiple users who will require access to the same group of emails. Here are some common situations you may be faced with regarding generic email accounts.

Fill out the  request form on InsideState; once the Department and Security have approved the request, Chris Harris will grant access to the email. Chris will assign the ticket to the Support Desk, and we will contact the user.

Contact the Support Desk to request access; they will need the generic email account's full email address. The Support Desk will then assign a ticket to the Networking team. Networking will grant you access to the Generic Email account. The Support Desk will contact you when the ticket is assigned back to them and verify you can access that email account. 

Users who have access to a Generic Email Account should see it added to their Inbox in Outlook automatically after a system restart. However, if the generic account does not show up after restart, please follow the steps below.

Open the Outlook app and select the File tab in the top left corner. Select Account Settings.

  • Select Account Settings again. 
  • Double-click on your name. 
  • Select More Settings.
  • Select the Advanced tab.
  • Select Add.
  • Enter the name or address of the generic email you need to be added.
  • Once your choice's generic email is listed in the ‘Open these additional mailboxes’ field, click Apply.
  • Select Ok.
  • Select Cancel.
  • Select Close.
  • The account should now appear in your Outlook inbox.

Navigate to .

Log in using your SDState email and password.

Click your profile picture in the upper right-hand corner and select Open another mailbox.

Enter the email address of the Generic email you have access to and select Open.
