Pathology and Necropsy

Five board certified veterinary pathologists are each assigned one duty day per week and together encompass a wide knowledge base from surgical pathology to exotic animals and wildlife, fish, laboratory animals and companion animals including horses, llamas, and alpacas to production animals including poultry, swine and ruminants.
For many sample submissions, the pathologist is considered the central diagnostician and works closely with other laboratory sections including bacteriology, virology, serology and outside laboratories to help solve herd disease dilemmas and outbreaks by way of whole body necropsy, gross tissue examination, ancillary test selection and recommendations, sample collection and as necessary microscopic examination (histopathology) and test interpretation.
The pathology team is assisted by a Necropsy Floor Supervisor and a dedicated cohort of pre-veterinary undergraduate students that help to process tissue and body submissions, uphold biosecurity protocols and maintain a clean work environment.
NOTE: The ADRDL does not accept animals from the general public for routine disposal. The ADRDL cannot accept any animals for rendering that have been euthanized with a barbiturate.
