Tim Peterson: Noir Exhibition Reception

Saturday, Apr. 5, 2025

Event Details

The South Dakota Art Museum proudly presents Illuminated Noir, a captivating showcase of two distinct bodies of work by Sturgis, South Dakota artist Tim Peterson. On view January 11 – April 6, the exhibition highlights Peterson’s versatility across media.

Peterson’s velvety oil pastel nocturnes explore the quiet mysteries of alleys, junkyards, and interstates, capturing what he calls the “static quality of a night scene,” evoking solitude and a cinematic film noir intrigue. These evocative nocturnes are beautifully contrasted by his plein air watercolors, vibrant depictions of street scenes drenched with natural light.

Join us for the exhibition reception on Saturday, April 5, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. Museum members will enjoy light appetizers and complimentary beverages. At 6:30 p.m., Peterson will present an artist talk about his creative practice.

Peterson’s relationship with the Museum spans decades. He first attended a reception here in 1981 (pictured, second from right) during an early South Dakota biennial, when his drawing Bunnies (pictured) was acquired for the permanent collection. We’re thrilled to welcome him back and share his remarkable art with you!
