This print was published in Historical and Statistical Information respecting the History, Condition, and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States, Vol. II (1884 reprint). Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, an early geographer, geologist, and ethnographer was commissioned by Congress to develop a comprehensive reference work about American Indian tribes.

The new sport of snow yachting was introduced in the March 9, 1887 issue of Scientific American magazine. The snow yacht in the image was constructed by Dr. H. M. Wheeler, Grand Forks, Dakota Territory.

In 1892, the Bowdle Flour mill was originally formed as a corporation by local residents. During the 1920s, the mill ground local wheat into flour and shipped it to England, Greece, Portugal, Ecuador, Spain, and Columbia. Early brands of flour from this mill were Diamond and Kaiser.

The Marion Giant FlipFlop Model 66 toaster is stainless steel construction and Art Deco design. Patented July 28, 1914, it was manufactured by Rutenber Electric Co., Marion, Ohio. The Rutenber Electric Company produced ranges, irons, grills, toasters, fans and more. The Marion Flip Flop Toaster, patented in 1914, was followed by the Marion Giant Flip Flop Toaster.

Daphne Chapman Serles, a South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts 1917 graduate, kept a scrapbook of her time at college, activities, and travelling with family and friends. One of the photos in this scrapbook is of two locomotives buried in snow. Written on the lower part of the photo is “Lemmon, SD.”  The photo was taken ca. 1915-1920.

This small box for storing matches measures 2 3/8” X 1 ¾”. It opens when the small spring-loaded button is pushed. The cover design of a pharaoh’s head, complete with asp at the forehead and wide neck plate and surrounded by papyrus blossoms, is typical of Egyptian Revival (1880-1930s) design.

Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the day with family and friends. This postcard is post marked Mellette Nov. 27, 1912, 6 p.m. The reverse of the card bears the simple greeting “With best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to all from your uncle, Gilbert H.”

When a donor sent the photo to the museum, he also sent along this description: "Old Time Farming--neighbor helping neighbor Gary Jager in wagon, Gerald Harms on tractor, seeding Pheasants Forever plot with the wagon and end gate seeder that Gerald's dad Sylvester Harms used to seed oats back in the 1950s. It worked great with no hickups. The farm is located at George, Iowa."
