Why Walk When You Can Ride?

Black and white photo of young boy in overalls, riding a bicycle. A black chicken rides along on the back. Photo taken in farm yard.
Young Ivan Palmer takes his chicken for a ride.

Celebrate chickens in September, National Chicken Month. What better way to enjoy this season than with this sweet photograph of Ivan S. Palmer riding his bike with his pet chicken catching a ride on the back? Taken near Mansfield, South Dakota, Ivan is believed to be seven or eight and the photo dates to 1939-1940. As a point of reference, Mansfield is about 18 miles south of Aberdeen, on the Spink County and Brown County Border. Ivan’s parents, Dan and Marie Palmer, lived on the “Brooks Place.” Not only does young Ivan seem to be having the time of his life, but the chicken also contentedly rides along, knowing it is better than walking.
