Animal Science Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to Jackrabbit Guarantee recipients, judging team members and many other top students. Scholarships are an integral part of Ƶ Animal Science. The department appreciates the generosity of the organizations and individuals, as well as their families and friends that make scholarships available.
The Animal Science Department uses the online scholarship application form available on MyState.
- The application is available by logging into a student’s MyState account and selecting the “Dashboard” tab. Then, if you scroll down, along the right-hand side, you will see the “Scholarship Application” section.
- Select either the New/Incoming student application or the Current/Continuing student application.
- On your application, please describe experiences you may have had with various species of livestock. Also indicate your career interest in a specific discipline, such as nutrition, genetics, reproduction, natural resource management and so forth.
Anderson Family Animal Science Scholarship
Selection of the scholarship recipient is based on the following criteria preferences:
- A student pursuing studies in Animal Science.
- Preference to renew to the same scholarship recipient if they remain eligible.
The recipient of the Anderson Family Animal Science Scholarship shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Animal Science Faculty Scholarship
The recipient of the Animal Science Faculty Scholarship in Support of the Jackrabbit Guarantee 2006 Challenge shall be a student who qualifies for the Jackrabbit Guarantee. Preference should be given to Animal Science majors. The recipient shall be selected by the Animal and Range Science Department.
Animal Science Freshman Scholarship Endowment
The scholarship recipients are determined by the Scholarship Committee of the Department of Animal and Range Science. Preference is given to qualified applicants who are committed to a major in Animal Science and who are freshmen.
Animal Science Scholarship in Honor of J. Milton Lang
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- Must major in animal science.
- Must be a South Dakota resident.
- Preference shall be given to seniors.
- Preference shall be given to residents of Corson, Perkins, or Meade Counties in South Dakota.
The recipient of the Animal Science Scholarship in Honor of J. Milton Lang shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Beef Bowl Scholarship
Awarded by Animal Science Department at their discretion.
Billie Sutton Memorial Scholarship in Animal and Range Sciences
The recipient of the Billie Sutton Memorial Scholarship should have an interest in livestock practices, participate in extra-curricular activities including membership in the Ƶ Young Democrats Club, and be a resident of South Dakota. The recipient must be a sophomore or junior student majoring in Animal Science at Ƶ.
Cassady Family Scholarship in Animal Science
The selection of the recipient shall:
- Be an Ƶ student in good standing who is majoring in Animal Science.
- Hold a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher at the time of the selection.
The recipient of the Cassady Family Scholarship shall be selected by the Animal Science Scholarship Committee.
Chris and Claudia Dinkel Scholarship in Animal Sciences
Recipients of the scholarship shall be:
- South Dakota high school graduates
- majoring in Animal Science
- chosen by the Animal and Range Sciences Department Scholarship committee
Selection shall be based on scholarship and financial need.
Preference is given to graduates of high schools with small enrollments.
Recipients of the Dinkel scholarship should be Animal Science majors who are completing their second year at Ƶ and who have selected the Science option of the Animal Science major.
Crawford Family Scholarship
Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences:
- A student majoring in Animal Science with a preference to a student with a stated interest in beef cattle production.
- A student with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Dakota Pet Breeders Association Scholarship Memory of Jeff Cross
Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences:
- Majoring in animal science.
- Pursing acceptance into a veterinary school of medicine program.
- Enrolled in their second year or above.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Dakota Pet Breeders Scholarship in Honor of Arnold Beukelman
Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences:
- A sophomore level student or above that is majoring in animal science.
- A student that is pursuing acceptance into a veterinary school of medicine program
Denny Everson Agrivisions Scholarship
The recipients must be:
- Animal Science majors
- with preference to students with an interest in Ag Business, Ag Banking or Economics and involvement in student organizations or leadership.
One student must be an incoming freshman and the other recipient an upper-class student. Each student should receive a $2500 scholarship. The scholarship recipients must receive a copy of Denny’s biography as part of receiving the scholarship.
The recipient of the Denny Everson Agrivisions Scholarship shall be selected by the Animal Science Department Scholarship Committee.
DeRouchey Family Scholarship in Swine Production
The selection of the recipient is based on the recipient being a sophomore or junior with an interest in working within the swine industry.
The recipient of the DeRouchey Family Scholarship in Swine Production shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science Scholarship Committee along with the Animal Science Department Head and Swine Faculty.
Don and Helen Jacobson and Family Scholarship in Animal Science
Scholarship recipient(s) is(are) majoring in Animal Science. The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Donald and Joyce DuBois Scholarship in Animal Science
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall be an Animal Science major.
- Preference shall be given to a resident of South Dakota.
- Preference shall be given to a recipient studying Beef Production.
The recipient(s) of the Donald and Joyce Dubois Scholarship in Animal Science shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Donald E. Ray Scholarship in Animal Science
The recipient shall major in animal science. The recipient of the Donald E. Ray Scholarship in Animal Science shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science Scholarship Committee.
Douglas Scholarship in Animal Science
Selection of the recipient will be based on the following criteria:
- Pursuing a degree in Animal Science.
- Demonstrating financial need.
- GPA in the range of 2.5-3.0.
- The scholarship is intentionally not aimed at a student with a superior academic record.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Doyce and Audrey Friedow Memorial Schol in Animal Science
Selection of the recipient will be based on the following criteria:
- A student majoring in Animal Science.
- A student that is a resident of South Dakota.
- Preference shall be given to students that have demonstrated an interest in swine and had active participation in 4-H, and/or FFA activities.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Fred and Joan DeRouchey Family Scholarship
The recipient of the scholarship must be pursuing a degree in Animal Science and has successfully completed one year of instruction at South Dakota State University. The recipient should have an interest in purebred livestock and demonstrate potential to improve the livestock industry. The recipient of the Fred and Joan Derouchey Family Scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Animal and Range Sciences scholarship Committee.
Fritz Family Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship shall be a student from South Dakota who is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences majoring in Animal Sciences and qualifies for the Jackrabbit Guarantee. The recipient of the Fritz Family Scholarship in Support of the Jackrabbit Guarantee 2010 Challenge shall be selected by the Department of Animal and Range Science.
Gordon L. Elzenga Scholarship
Selection of the recipient will be based on the following criteria:
- A sophomore level student or above that is majoring in Animal Science. If an Animal Science major cannot be awarded, then preference shall be given to students majoring in other agriculture related fields.
- A student demonstrating financial need.
- The scholarship shall be renewable if the student remains eligible.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
H.M. Briggs Animal Science Leadership Scholarship
Recipient of the H. M. Briggs Scholarship is selected by the scholarship committee of the Department of Animal Science. The recipient must be a student who intends to major in or who is majoring in Animal Science at Ƶ.
Hagen Kelsey Scholarship
The recipient of the Hagen Kelsey Scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science Scholarship Committee. The scholarship is renewable and may be received by a recipient more than once. The selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient should be in their sophomore, junior or senior year in any major.
- The recipient should have completed a minimum of five years of 4-H Club work showing either purebred Shorthorn cattle or purebred Corriedale sheep.
- The recipient must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or better.
- The recipient should be a resident of South Dakota.
Harold Arendt Memorial Scholarship
Students selected for the Harold Arendt Scholarship should be in their Junior or Senior year at Ƶ, major in Animal Science, be an above average student, hold positions of leadership, and show ability in the art of spoken and written communication.
Harry Berghuis Memorial Scholarship in Animal Science
The selection of the recipient is based on the student majoring in Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Biological Science. The student must be from South Dakota. The recipient of the Harry Berghuis Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Animal Science shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science.
Hillman Family Scholarship
The recipient of the Hillman Family Scholarship in Support of the Jackrabbit Guarantee 2006 Challenge shall be a student who qualifies for the Jackrabbit Guarantee. The student should also demonstrate an interest in the Livestock or Meats Judging Teams. The recipient shall be selected by the Animal and Range Science Department.
Hilton M. Briggs Scholarship in Animal Science
The recipient of this scholarship shall be an Animal Science major who qualifies for the Jackrabbit Guarantee.
Howard Hesby (H2) Memorial Scholarship
The selection of the recipient(s) of the Howard Hesby (H2) Memorial Scholarship in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient of this scholarship shall be a student majoring in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at Ƶ.
- Preference should be given to students who have a good work ethic and are active in organizations.
- Academic achievement should not be the deciding factor in selecting the recipient of this scholarship.
- This award is renewable to the same student if he or she remains qualified at the discretion of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship Committee.
The recipient shall be selected by the Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship Committee.
Hugh and Rita Barnett Family Scholarship
The Hugh and Rita Barnett Family Scholarship will be awarded through the Department of Animal and Range Sciences until such time that adequate funding is available to also provide a scholarship in the College of FCS. The recipient will be a junior or senior majoring in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences. Preference should be given to students who were active in FFA and/or 4-H in their community or in sheep production. This scholarship is not renewable.
J. O. "Jule" Lee Memorial Scholarship
The recipient of the J.O. Lee Scholarship is selected by the Department Head and two faculty members in the department of Animal Science. Selection is based on average scholastic achievement, participation in extra-curricular activities, and promise to the agricultural industry. The recipient should be in his or her third year of Animal Science-Sheep Unit at Ƶ.
J.W. and Mary McCarty Scholarship in Animal Science
Sophomore, Junior or Senior majoring in Animal Science
James F. and May McCarville Memorial Scholarship
The James and May McCarville Memorial Scholarship is annually awarded to a student, who, at the time of the award presentation, is enrolled in his or her junior year at Ƶ and is majoring in Animal Science, specializing in Beef Cattle Production. Selection of the scholarship recipient shall be made by the College of Agriculture Scholarship Committee. Financial need shall not be a major factor in Committee Selection of a scholarship recipient.
Joe and Lea Minyard Scholarship in Animal Science
The recipient of the Joe and Lea Minyard Scholarship in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at Ƶ should be a junior or senior majoring in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences. The student must maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average. Preferences shall be given to students with financial need, commitment to the profession and those with a strong record of achievement in extracurricular activities. This scholarship is renewable at the discretion of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences. The recipient shall be selected by the Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship committee.
Johannsen and Cutler Family Scholarship
Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences:
- A student pursuing a major in animal science.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
John and Alyce B. Travers Scholarship in Animal Science
The recipients of the John and Alyce Travers Scholarship in Animal and Range Sciences should major in Animal and Range Sciences. If Animal and Range Sciences majors are not eligible, the awards are open to any agricultural major. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Harding County, South Dakota. Freshmen and upperclassmen are eligible for this award.
John Zilverberg Family Scholarship in Animal Science
The recipient of the Zilverberg Scholarship must be a resident of South Dakota and either a sophomore or junior student. The recipient should be majoring in animal science at Ƶ and is selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Animal and Range Sciences Department.
Karl K. Riedemann Animal Science Scholarship
Selection of the recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences:
- A student pursuing studies in animal science.
- A student demonstrating financial need.
- A student with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
The recipient of the Karl K. Riedemann Animal Science Scholarship shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Ken Sutton Memorial Scholarship in Animal and Range Sciences
The selection of the recipient of the Ken Sutton Memorial Scholarship in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences shall be based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall be in their sophomore, junior or senior year majoring in animal and range sciences in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences at South Dakota State University.
- Preference will be given to students who are active in the Ƶ rodeo team.
- This award is renewable at the discretion of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship Committee.
The recipient shall be selected by the Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship Committee.
Lamb Bonanza Scholarship
Awarded by the Animal Science department.
Lamb Bonanza Scholarship in Animal Science

Larry D. Nelson Memorial Scholarship in Animal Science
The selection of the recipient for the Larry D. Nelson Memorial Scholarship in Animal Science is based on the following criteria:
- This scholarship shall be awarded to students who are majoring in Animal Science and are entering their sophomore year.
- Preference shall be given to South Dakota residents with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who are involved in extracurricular activities.
The recipient shall be selected by the Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship Committee.
Marjorie J. Thom Scholarship in Animal & Range Sciences
The selection of the recipient of the Marjorie J. Thom Scholarship in Animal and Range Sciences is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient should be an entering junior or senior majoring in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences.
- Preference shall be given to students with financial needs, a strong record of achievement in extracurricular activities, and high academic performance.
- This award is renewable at the discretion of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences.
The Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship Committee shall select the recipient of the Marjorie J. Thom Scholarship in Animal and Range Sciences.
Mary Williams Hanson Scholarship in Agriculture
Selection of the Mary Williams Hanson Scholarship recipients is made by the Scholarship Committee of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. Preference is given to students majoring in Animal Science. Recipients should be completing either their first, second, or third year of studies at Ƶ.
Matt and Brenda Evans Scholarship
The recipient of the Matt and Brenda Evans Scholarship in Support of the Jackrabbit Guarantee 2006 Challenge shall be a student who qualifies for the Jackrabbit Guarantee. The student shall be an Animal or Range Sciences major at South Dakota State. First preference goes to students coming from a farm or ranch who demonstrated financial need. If no suitable candidate can be identified meeting these criteria than any student meeting the remaining criteria will be considered. The recipient shall be selected by the Animal and Range Science Department.
Merlin Van Walleghen Family Scholarship
The selection of the recipient of the Merlin Van Walleghen Family Scholarship in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences shall be based on the following criteria:
- Upper-level students majoring in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences will be eligible for this scholarship.
- Preference shall be given to students with good potential and character.
- This scholarship is renewable if the student remains eligible at the discretion of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship Committee.
The recipient shall be selected by the Department of Animal and Range Sciences Scholarship Committee.
Mike and Betty MacNeil Scholarship in Animal Science
Selection of the recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences: The recipient shall be a graduate student in Animal Science; with preference for an individual pursuing research in Applied Animal Breeding or Genetics, and/or in Livestock Systems Analysis. The recipient of the Mike and Betty MacNeil Scholarship in Animal Science shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Nold Family Scholarship in Animal Science
Selection of the recipient will be based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall study any major within the Department of Animal Science
- The recipient shall have or currently be competing on a departmental judging team.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Orville Stangl Scholarship Fund
Selection of the Orville Stangl Scholarship recipient is made by the Scholarship Committee of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. Recipients should be majoring in a field of study related to animal agriculture. Preference is given to students from South Dakota.
Paul A. Batcheller Memorial Scholarship
The recipient of the Paul A. Batcheller Scholarship is selected based on potential for academic success at Ƶ, future leadership in American ag business and industry, and citizenship participation.
Pipestone System Scholarship in Animal Science
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient must major in animal science.
- The recipient must demonstrate leadership qualities.
- The recipient must demonstrate a focus or interest in swine production.
- Preference shall be granted to seniors.
- Preference shall be given to students that have completed or are currently enrolled in the Swine Science Certificate Program through South Dakota State University.
Pork Classic Scholarship
The recipients must major in animal science and have an interest in pork.
Prairie Queen Mill LLC Scholarship
Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences:
- A student that is pursuing a major in animal science.
- Preference shall be given to a student with a specialization swine nutrition.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Prairie Queen Pork LLC Scholarship
Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences:
- A student that is pursuing a major in animal science.
- Preference shall be given to a student with a specialization swine production.
The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Richard and LaRayne Wahlstrom Scholarship in Animal Science
Recipients of the Wahlstrom Scholarship should be first, second, or third year students who are majoring in the Animal and Range Sciences curriculum and have indicated a special interest in animal nutrition.
Robert W. and Jane C. Hanson Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship shall be a student who qualifies for the Jackrabbit Guarantee and is majoring in Animal Science. The recipient of the Robert W. and Jane C. Hanson Scholarship in Support of the Jackrabbit Guarantee 2010 Challenge shall be selected by the Department of Animal and Range Sciences.
Roger and Patty Koch Scholarship in Animal Science
Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences:
- A student pursuing studies in animal science.
- A student demonstrating financial need.
- The recipient shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
SD Pork Producers Council Scholarships
The recipient of the South Dakota Pork Producers Council Scholarship must be a incoming junior Animal and Range Science major with at least a 2.7 grade point average, who has evidenced sincere interest in studying and working in some phase of the swine industry. Other considerations should be scholastic achievement, need, involvement in student activities and character.
Ƶ Signature Wool Project Scholarship in Animal Science
The recipient shall be an Animal Science major. Preference shall be given to students that demonstrate an interest in the sheep industry. The recipient of the Ƶ Signature Wool Scholarship in Animal Science shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science Scholarship Committee.
South Dakota Horse Council, Inc. Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship must have a 3.0 GPA and pursuing a minor in Equine Studies. Preference will be given to a student that is a member of the Ƶ Animal Science Horse Club and is a South Dakota native. Preference will also be given to those who helped at South Dakota Horse Council activities. The recipient of the scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science Scholarship Committee.
South Dakota Master Pork Producers Scholarship Endowment
Recipients of the scholarship shall be residents of the State of SD and must demonstrate an interest in Swine Production. Candidates for the scholarship award may be either freshmen, sophomore, junior or senior students who are in good standing with the University and with the Department of Animal Sciences at Ƶ.
South Eastern Livestock Cooperative Scholarship
The candidates for the Southeastern Livestock Cooperative Scholarship should be a junior or senior majoring in animal science at Ƶ. Each candidate must have at least a cumulative 2.7 grade point average. Selection is also based on participation in extra-curricular activities, leadership abilities and promise to the profession of animal science.
Underwood Family Scholarship
The selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall major in Animal Science.
- The recipient shall hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Preference shall be given to students with demonstrated interest in meat science which may be evidenced by minoring in meat science, minoring in food science, current or past work in the meats lab, and/or participation on the meat judging team.
The recipient of the Underwood Family Scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science Scholarship Committee.
Wright Family Scholarships
The recipients of the Wright Family Scholarships in Support of the Jackrabbit Guarantee 2006 Challenge shall be a student who qualifies for the Jackrabbit Guarantee. The students shall also be enrolled in the Animal Science Department in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. The recipient shall be selected by the Animal and Range Science Department.
Barry H. and Jane K. Dunn Graduate School in Animal Science
The recipient of the scholarship will be a graduate student enrolled in the Department of Animal Science studying aspects of beef cattle production. The recipient of the Barry H. Dunn Animal Science Graduate Student Scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science Scholarship Committee.
Darwin and JoAnn Britzman Graduate Scholarship
Selection of recipients of the Darwin and JoAnn Britzman Graduate Scholarship in Animal Science will be based on academic performance, productivity of research program and contributions to the Animal Science Department's mission. Preference will be given to Ph.D. students pursuing a nutrition discipline. Students pursuing M.S. degrees or other disciplines may also be considered.
Meat Nerd: Excellence in Meat Science Scholarship
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall demonstrate academic interest in meat science and/or closely related areas of study.
- The recipient must maintain good academic standing.
- First preference shall be given to graduate level students.
- The scholarship may not be used to fulfill any guarantee scholarship commitments such as the Jackrabbit Guarantee.
The recipient of the Meat Nerd: Excellence in Meat Science Scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Animal Science Scholarship Committee.
Mike and Betty MacNeil Scholarship in Animal Science
Selection of the recipient(s) is based on the following criteria preferences: The recipient shall be a graduate student in Animal Science; with preference for an individual pursuing research in Applied Animal Breeding or Genetics, and/or in Livestock Systems Analysis.
