Crispy, warm waffles are delicious plain, with jam, honey, fruit, whipped cream or whatever your favorite topping might be. This waffle iron sits on the range top of a cast iron cook stove. The handle to the left belongs to the collar that fits into the burner or to be used over a campfire. The waffle iron is then set on the collar. At one end of the waffle iron there is a ball shaped joint that allows the iron to open and to flip it so that both sides of the waffle are cooked.

This postcard titled Elevator Row, Pukwana, South Dakota is postmarked 1908 and was sent to Charles Winksworth, Milwaukee, WI. The message on the back reads “Dear Cousin, This is a photo of the elevators we have in our town. I suppose they will look small to you. With love from your loving cousin Muriel.”

In the 17th and 18th centuries, betty lamps were a readily available lighting source. The name of the lamp is from the German word besser, meaning better. Betty lamps were an improvement over rush lamps in that they provide more, brighter light. They burned oil (fish, animal, or vegetable). The wick was a piece of twisted cotton that sat in the oil and was held in place by the spout. The lamps came with wick picks to pull the wick out farther and keep it burning.

This odd-looking tractor is a Lion tractor, manufactured by the Lion Tractor Company, Minneapolis, MN. The Lion, first marketed in 1914, was a tricycle wheel arrangement with two large front wheels and one small rear wheel. All its weight was directly over the drive wheel. The driver sat high up on a seat above the rear wheel. The Lion sold for $566 and later for $795.

Small songbirds have been popular pets over the years. Many pioneer women kept canaries, parakeets or finches for their beauty, companionship and for their song. Birdcages are often seen in photographs of pioneer homes as well as in urban Victorian home interiors. This Art Deco style wire cage is painted pale yellow, has two wooden perches and two white ceramic feeders. On the door of the cage is a metal tag reading "Hendryx New Haven, Conn. USA.”

After graduating from Kansas City Veterinary College, Sydney Clark built a large practice in McCook County and served the surrounding counties.

• Throwback Thursday

The Boys Working Reserve was a joint program of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Department of Labor. Boys ages 16 to 18 were recruited for service mainly on farms; Industrial and Vocational units developed later.
